a weighty discussion

So... I have about two more months until my next labwork appt. I wanted to see (back in July) how a few months of living (closer to) vegan would affect my levels.. you know.. compared to the levels of a 28 year old who is slinging McDeath...
Anyhow I was SHOCKED to find out I had *high* cholesterol. I guess I am one of those who produces too much genetically, and by high, it was 205 not a million. But still it must have been higher when I WAS eating meat.

So, I am just throwing this out there..
Its been since may that I have been vegan 98% of the time. You know I once ordered the kale at Cracker barrel only to realize I was chewing a piece of bacon.. etc. And I have to wonder, why I havent even lost like you know 2 pounds?
So this isnt a whiny post, but I am going to be honest about this small disappointment, I thought healthier eating and working out all the time would at least give me something..
Its not WHY I went vegan.. but I thought it would be a perk...
so thats whats on my mind tonight.. that and looking into supplements to kick my thyroid into life...
any thoughts?

What kind of breakfast are you eating? I usually begin my day with a fruit smoothie and only have fruit until eleven or so. Since fruit is broken down very easily in the stomach and is through the stomach in about 30-45 minutes, it gets things moving quickly and easily for your digestive track.

Also, when I first started down the road of changing my eating habits, I decided to begin with breakfast and only changed my breakfast meals, just having a smoothie alone without changing anything else, I lost about 10 lbs. This was over 2 years ago when I became a vegetarian and slowly taught my palate that fruits and veggies are what I should be eating the most of each and every day. Now, my palate prefers vegetables and fruits to greasy, cruddy, no-nutrional value food. Just letting you know what worked for me.

Well, I think some people loose weight when they go vegan because they don't know what to snack or just eat lower calorie meals - it's not that you automatically loose weight when you stop eating dairy. Unfortunately! ;-)

I think sometimes it's hard to lose weight when you switch to veg/vegan because when people first switch they end up eating more to try to help them feel like they aren't abstaining. That's my only guess. I didn't lose any weight when I transferred to a 90% vegan diet but I did lose about 10 lbs when I went vegetarian.

In other news, I tagged you in a meme:

I lost a little weight when I went vegan but not a lot. It definitely isn't a given. Skinny vegans aren't automatic. It still comes down to how many calories you are eating to how many you are using. I'm losing weight very very slowly. I'm learning that I don't need that many calories which is a horrible realization for someone who loves food and to eat. The biggest help for me to jump start weight loss is to eat fruit for breakfast and a salad for lunch (it can be a big salad). I kept eating regular cooked dinners. I feel like I could lose more weight by going all raw but I worry that I don't understand nutrition enough for that yet.

Thanks for all your great comments. I try to be focused on what a difference I am making in the world and not worry so much about my waistline.. but maybe its something we all work on with our self image. I will be happy to post any results from the great advice, and what my blood work results are when I get them in.
